The NZHIA 2024 Media Campaign: Act now to help make change

The goal of the 3-month campaign is for the government to announce a review of our regulations to get us out of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1975 (MODA).

We are not a drug crop, we are just another arable and horticultural primary industry.

This can be done if we can harness the power of the Hemp Army and coalition of the willing to act/share and make first contact on behalf of iHemp.

Our goal is to have a review of our regulations announced by early 2025 leading to a fully enabled iHemp industry outside of MODA by 2026 – this election cycle.

Catalyst for change

We can complement other primary industries, wool, forestry, sheep and beef, dairy, vegetables and the horticultural industry, we want to join Aotearoa/New Zealand up!

We are useful rotation crops and alternative land uses for farmers, growers, and Iwi to use in their farming rotation. We are a great, sustainable ingredient and raw material for industry to utilise making products for the local and export market. Our supply chain starts on farms and due to its bulky nature (high volume, low weight), we need to add value locally.

This presents many bio-regional development opportunities for local employment across a range of sectors. Opportunities for investment to create resilient supply chains for products that can be made from hemp, which can feed, clothe and house New Zealanders.

The value chain is immense, with many opportunities to add value and move up the supply chain, by using raw materials from the farm and creating a fit-for-purpose that meets consumer demand.

Farms and primary producers can produce increasing volumes of crops that, with local processing, are useful as ingredients and industry feedstocks for a wide range of applications.

  • Providing a sustainable source of materials for a wide range of economic sectors
  • Food and Natural Health products
  • Building materials, plastic/composites, pulp and paper, biochar and activated carbon
  • Biofuels and biorefineries to provide industrial chemicals
  • Textiles and fibre products

The campaign is over three months (Oct-Dec 2024) and follows three themes:
– Campaign 1: iHemp needs to get out of the Misuse of Drugs Act (1975) and Medicines Act (1981)
– Campaign 2: iHemp regulations need to be reviewed to enable the industry and make them fit for purpose
– Campaign 3: We want a new industry for Aotearoa/New Zealand

We have put together the required information and evidence in a series of blogs as linked above. We hope you enjoy your journey of discovery of these topics, by following these links, you will learn more and realise the impact of the upcoming iHemp Industry.
