5th International Hemp Building Symposium 6-7th October

The IHBA is proud to announce the 5th gathering of International Hemp Building experts will be held in the Uckermark region of Germany to the North of Berlin on the 6-7th October 2015. The venue is the Schlusshof situated in a rural location, 1.30 hour from Berlin.

The two days of activity will include presentations of academic thesis, case studies and new material development. As part of the Symposium there will also be an educational visit to the Hanffaser factory to actually see Hemp building materials being processed and uses demonstrated.

The Symposium language will be English.
This years accommodation is in the Schlusshof venue, where the Symposium is being held and along with the evening meal is included in the delegate fee.

NZHIA puts hemp seed food issue on the TV3 news

TV3 recently visited Penny Young, NZHIA Secretary at her hemp farm in Hunna, South Auckland

New Zealand industry and government want access to hemp foods, but as we share food safety standards with Australia we were outvoted in the FSANZ, meeting on 30 Jan 2015.

Our Food Safety Minister, Jo Goodhew voted yes, but the Australians have 9 votes and have decided to reject the Application.

The Forum of Food Ministers representing FSANZ require further work to be done on the issues they have identified  (see their official communique at

Hon Jo Goodhew says “I can certainly understand why people wanting to grow it, people wanting to consume it who know that it is safe, I can understand why they’re impatient to get on with it,”


Good for the NZHIA

This was also a great opportunity to promote the restarted NZHIA and the April meeting with the Ministries of Health and Primary Industries.

The Executive are excited that the new Membership year has started on 1 April 2015. Our next step is raise our profile and contacting people involved in the industry to invite them to join.

Hemp Foods and Body Care Retail Market in U.S. Achieves 21.2% Growth in 2014

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Hemp Industries Association (HIA), a non-profit trade association consisting of hundreds of hemp businesses, has released final estimates of the size of the 2014 U.S. retail market for hemp products. Data from market research supports an estimate of total retail sales of hemp food and body care products in the United States at $200 million. Sales of popular hemp items like non-dairy milk, shelled seed, soaps and lotions have continued to skyrocket against the backdrop of the new hemp research provision in the Farm Bill, and increasing grassroots pressure to allow hemp to be grown domestically on a commercial scale once again for U.S. processors and manufacturers. The HIA has also reviewed sales of clothing, auto parts, building materials and various other products, and estimates the total retail value of hemp products sold in the U.S. in 2014 to be at least $620 million.  Read more…
